Lifting shackles are used to connect elements of lifting and rigging systems in the maritime industry, building, towing ect. Lifting shackle is used in assembly and lifting operations, on sailing vessels to connect rigging elements and fasten masts, sails, anchor chain to anchor, for towing and evacuation of vehicles and other critical tasks where it is necessary to ensure a reliable detachable connection. Lifting shackles are placed in the holes of the crosshead eyelets to lift machine engines, large metal structures, machine tools, industrial equipment, etc. The shackle consists of a U-shaped or omega-shaped bracket with holes at the ends. A special pin in the form of a bolt or screw (depending on the type of load-lifting shackle) is threaded into the hole. In shackles designed for heavy-duty applications, the pin is additionally cottered.
Types of lifting shackles
Shackles are universal removable elements, each type of which has its pros and cons. What types of shackles are there? They are distinguished by three main criteria.
1. Type of galvanization:
- Galvanized shackle, which makes the products resistant to wear and corrosion. Galvanizing involves electrochemical deposition of the surface of a metal staple using an electrolyte. The result is an anti-corrosion layer of 10-25 microns.Such products are inexpensive.
- Hot-dip galvanized lifting shackles are considered the most reliable and wear-resistant. Steel products are immersed in a galvanizing bath at a temperature of 460 °C.
The result is a protective layer of galvanized coating with a thickness of 45 to 65 microns that is resistant to impact. Hot-dip galvanized shackles have one interesting feature: damaged areas of the coating, due to the high anodicity of zinc, are gradually tightened by galvanizing at a rate of 2 mm per year to their original appearance.
2. Type of eyelet:
- U-shaped - most often used for connecting chains and steel ropes with different end elements.
- omega-shaped - due to their shape, they are more convenient for towing vehicles, connecting chain and webbing branches of a sling with different end load elements.
3. Type of locking pin:
- Bolted connection with cotter pin - provides a secure connection, so shackles with this type of pin are designed for the most demanding applications.
- Screw connection - quick to assemble, used for typical tasks. Shackles with a screw are afraid of torque, as the connection may loosen.
