Steel ropes

Steel ropes are used as load-bearing structural elements in lifting and transporting machines and mechanisms: cranes, hoists, electric hoists and hoist trays, traction winches, equipment for drilling wells, coal mines, cable cars in the mountains, process plants, earthmoving machines and other types of road construction equipment. Some types of steel cables are used to make rope slings for lifting loads. This primarily refers to steel ropes manufactured in accordance with EN12385-4.

Steel wire ropes (elevator wire ropes) are used to lift and lower passenger and freight elevators. Elevator Wire ropes differ in design and price. Ropes are used to equip wheeled automobile, gantry, tower cranes, suspended cable cars, ships, bulldozers, scrapers, small mechanization equipment (SMEs) - hand winches, MTMs (mounting and traction mechanisms), etc. Heavy industrial installations and other devices 
with free suspension of loads are equipped with special non-torsion cargo ropes of 19x7 and 35Wx7 construction. Zinc-plated wire ropes are often used in marine rigging, for the manufacture of decorations, braces, spacers, and safety halyards.

What is the difference between steel cables?

When choosing a steel wire rope, you need to consider a number of factors that will allow you to use the product for a long time and safely for specific production tasks.
1. Purpose. There are cargo and elevator wire ropes. 
2. Construction. The most popular designs of steel cables are 6x7, 7x7, 6x19 (the first digit is the number of strands, the second digit is the number of wires in a strand). The more wires in the structure, the more flexible the steel rope.
3. Diameter. Steel cables are manufactured in a wide range of diameters: 0.55 - 65 mm. Small diameter ropes are used for decorative, household and industrial needs, and large diameter steel cables are used for large-capacity hoisting and transport machines.
4. Core. The flexibility, strength, and scope of use of a steel wire rope depend on the core material. Ropes are made on the basis of a steel or organic core. Products with a steel core have a low tensile strength and a higher operating temperature. The organic core not only fills the void formed between the strands and prevents the strands from shifting to the center of the rope. It protects the wire from corrosion due to the impregnated lubricant, which gradually lubricates the surface of the wires during rope bending.
5. Type of lubricant. The presence of lubrication helps protect steel cables from corrosion processes during storage, transportation and operation. “Dry” unlubricated ropes and partially lubricated ropes are also produced - the so-called ropes without external lubrication. Zinc-plated and stainless steel ropes are not lubricated. The type of lubrication is indicated in the product data sheet.
6. Direction of wire stranding. There are single-ended and cross braided ropes.
7. Wire coating. The wire surface can be galvanized or uncoated. The galvanized coating prevents corrosion from external aggressive factors during operation, which will increase the service life of the product.
8. Marking group. Steel rope manufacturers specify the following marking groups: 1770; 1960 and 2160 N/mm. This parameter determines the tensile characteristics and the scope of the product.

At the final technological stage of production, the cables are subjected to preliminary deformation by tempering and straightening the metal product. This ensures a number of undeniable advantages of hardware products: it prevents the free ends of the cable from unwinding and rotating, the wire does not fray, and the cable does not fold into a loop.

Features of handling steel ropes

Since steel wire ropes are manufactured by the stranding method, it is important to avoid unwinding and twisting the rope into a figure of eight when working with the product (winding/unwinding). To this end, place the drum with the rope on the unwinding mechanism so that its axis is parallel to the horizon. It is also necessary to observe the distance between the drums. It should be equal to at least 300 diameters 
of the rewound cable. This will minimize the number of kinks in the cable, which is important for further operation.

How to measure the diameter of a wire rope? To do this, you will need a caliper, with the help of which the diameter of the rope is measured at two points at a distance of at least one meter in two planes, mutually perpendicular to each other. To prevent unwinding, the cut ends of the rope are tied with soft wire.
