Types of lifting slings and popular designs
Lifting slings, depending on the material of manufacture, are classified into 4 large groups:
1. Wire rope slings. These removable lifting devices have excellent load-bearing capacity, resistance to sudden loads (the rope smooths out tension), and are less complex to manufacture (this applies to slings, the loops of which are formed by swaging the ends of the rope on a hydraulic press with an aluminum sleeve). Manual splicing is quite laborious - it involves weaving pre-loosened strands of the rope end into
the body of the sling. Steel ropes without external lubrication with a diameter of 4.0 to 65 mm are used to manufacture slings, which makes it possible to manufacture slings with a lifting capacity from 250 kg to 60 tons. Load-lifting devices based on steel ropes operate at temperatures from -45 °C to +100 °C. The safety factor is 5:1. The most popular rope sling designs are: single leg soft eyed and four-leg lifting sling).
2. Chain slings. These are the most durable and reliable types of slings, used where the use of load-lifting devices made of other materials is dangerous. First and foremost, these are the main workshops of metallurgical plants, where high temperatures and aggressive environments are present. The products are designed for operation at ambient temperatures up to 300 °C, and when the rated load capacity of the product is reduced, the slings can operate at temperatures up to 500 °C and above. Chain slings are compact, easy to assemble, and quick to manufacture (like a construction set), are not affected by loads with sharp edges, and are easy to discard. The lifting chain does not spring, unlike steel wire ropes, and the chain leg of the sling can be adjusted in length by installing special grab-hooks. A very important feature of chain slings is their repairability. For the manufacture of this type of sling, a lifting chain of strength class 8 or 10 with a caliber of 6 to 32 mm is used. For more responsible tasks, it is better to buy G-100 (class 10) chain slings, although their cost is an order of magnitude higher. The most popular chain sling designs are: 1-4 leg lifting sligns, as well as slings for securing loads with a noose.
3. Webbing slings. These are slings made of a load-bearing tape dyed in a specific color, with a width of 50 to 300 mm and a safety factor of at least 7:1. The locks of the sling are sewn according to a specific algorithm using special threads on robotic sewing machines. Textile slings are used to move fragile, painted, and polished loads. The most popular sling designs are soft eyed single slings and endless slings.
In addition, to expand the scope of use, slings are equipped with various rigging end elements: links and hooks.
4. Round slings. An alternative to webbing slings for lifting and moving valuable cargo. This product is a closed sleeve containing a large number of polyester strands. The production technology for this type of sling allows for the quick and high-quality manufacture of round slings with extreme load capacities. The products are CE (European Union) certified.
